From Chihuahuas to German Shepherds, the love for dogs spans across all 50 states. A recent study has revealed which dog breeds Americans are most keen on adopting or rescuing.

Here are the dog breeds that people in Florida most want to adopt:

• Chihuahua
• Yorkshire Terrier
• Beagle
• German Shepherd
• Golden Retriever

Pet nutrition experts at PetLab analyzed over 200 AKC-recognized dog breeds using ten key search metrics, including terms like ‘adopt [breed]’ and ‘[breed] rescue near me.’ The study aimed to determine which four-legged friends captured people’s hearts nationally and could be crowned the dog breed Americans most want to adopt.

Chihuahuas are America’s most desired breed for adoption, accounting for 6 out of every 100,000 monthly Google searches in America with terms like ‘adopt Chihuahua.’ Their petite size, ease of care, and lively personality have cemented their place in the hearts of many, with TikTok videos relating to Chihuahuas being viewed more than 25 billion times on record.

Chihuahuas are most popular in Florida, Virginia, and Arizona, where per 100,000 residents, they receive 9.64, 8.2, and 7.99 searches, respectively.

Placing second is the Beagle, with 4.8 out of every 100,000 searches from people seeking to rescue this breed each month, known to get along with young children and other dogs. Due to their curious and merry nature, they are a beloved breed, with Americans viewing TikTok videos tagged #beagle more than 23 million times per month.

The highest searches for Beagles come from Vermont, Delaware, and Rhode Island, where for every 100,000 Google searches, terms such as ‘rescue Beagle’ and ‘Beagle rescue near me’ receive 8.11, 7.2, and 7.16 searches, respectively.

Golden Retrievers rank third on the list of breeds Americans are most eager to rescue, with 4.78 searches per 100,000 people dedicated to them. With their warm disposition and striking golden fur, it’s clear why they’ve claimed a spot among the top three rescue breeds in America.

New Hampshire, Vermont, and Massachusetts search for information on rescuing this breed the most, contributing 8.3, 6.69, and 6.58 Google searches per 100,000 each month. Americans love this breed so much that more than 3 million videos tagged with ‘#goldenretriever’ have been uploaded to TikTok.

Coming in fourth is the German Shepherd, known for its trainability, loyalty, and intelligence. They have an average Google search volume of 4.55 per 100,000 citizens, making them a popular choice among Americans looking to adopt or rescue. The breed has attracted more than 132 million Americans to view TikTok videos tagged ‘#germanshepherd’ in the past 30 days alone.

The states where German Shepherd adoption terms are searched for the most are Ohio, West Virginia, and South Carolina, where for every 100,000 monthly Google searches, they contribute 7.47, 7.18, and 6.92, respectively.

Rounding up the top five is the Yorkshire Terrier. Their delicate appearance and feisty spirit have attracted Americans seeking to adopt. For every 100,000 searches in America, 4.54 were for terms such as ‘Yorkshire Terrier adoption’ or ‘rescue Yorkshire Terrier.’

The states with the highest interest in Yorkshire Terrier adoption, based on average searches per 100,000 residents, are North Carolina, South Carolina, and Delaware, contributing 7.19, 6.48, and 6.46 searches, respectively.

Coming in at the sixth and seventh spots are the Siberian Husky and Pembroke Welsh Corgi. With its wolf-like appearance and mesmerizing eyes, the Siberian Husky has an average search volume of 4.32 per 100,000 for terms such as ‘Siberian Husky for adoption.’ Not far behind is the Pembroke Welsh Corgi, a breed synonymous with royalty and famed for its endearing short legs, holds a search volume of 4.15 per 100,000 people living in each state.

Labrador Retriever and Pug place eighth and ninth, respectively. Labradors, renowned as one of the most family-friendly breeds, have an average search volume for terms such as ‘Labrador Retriever adoption events’ of 4.02 per 100,000 Google searches in America. Meanwhile, the charming and comical Pug follows closely with a search volume of 3.94 per 100,000 Google searches.

Securing the tenth spot is the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. This affectionate breed has a national search volume of 3.55 per 100,000 Google searches. The states that search for terms such as ‘Cavalier King Charles Spaniel rescue center’ and ‘Cavalier King Charles Spaniel adoption fees’the most are Maine contributing 7.59 searches, Vermont with 7.08 searches, and Massachusetts with 6.29 searches per 100,000 residents.

According to Christopher Masanto, co-founder & CEO of PetLab:

“This uptick in adoption-related searches is heartening. However, it’s crucial to understand the challenges shelters confront. With capacity limits, each search and adoption truly counts.

“Even if you’re unable to adopt, it’s important to ensure that your pets can be returned to you if ever lost. Microchipping your pet costs as little as $25 but could be the difference between reuniting with your beloved family pet or heartache. According to the ASPCA, 710,000 pet dogs (out of 6.3 million total pets that enter the US shelter system each year) are returned to their owners, thanks partly to microchipping.”
